Of course this influence in workers wanting a union at their jobs; but is not more rewarding and satisfying to know you are receiving what your personal review is saying; at the same time having more stability, meaning that the institution we are working for does not run the risk of having to reduce personnel or worst close its doors. It is also true that organizations need to have representatives that would attend management meetings and present the employees’ point of view, concerns, aspirations, and those bright ideas that would help to have a better working environment and job satisfaction. In 2008, Reynolds article on Labor Unions showed how union are declining its power with employees and the number of members in the private sector is being minimum comparing with the public sector. Reynolds also suggested that workers associations, formed by regular employees and that would work closely to the organization’s human resources department could replace the unions. People would always think that employers do not worry or work for the employees’ benefits, that they take advantage and the only goal is to make them work hard and generate bigger profit. Unions said they will bargain the best for them, making their wages raised, but who is worrying of the quality of the job and service? Who is worrying of having a secure income and not having the fear of layoffs or bankrupts? In conclusion, we can see unions is declining in the number of members, also in the power they had over employees to convinced they are working only on their benefits without any political interest; and that the actual corporation organization with its human resources department do not have the need of unions trying to tell what the employees need or want because they can do it themselves.

Big American dream in The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby and Babylon Revisited, both by F. Scott Fitzgerald, are stories about the emptiness and recklessness of the 1920s. Each story has its distinctions, but Fitzgeralds condemnation of the decade reverberates through both. Fitzgerald explores and displays insufficiencies of the vacuous period, and does so with sharp clarity and depth, leaving no crude, barbarous habit to imagination. Fitzgerald had a deep and personal affliction with the 1920s (most notably in the Eastern United States), and in both The Great Gatsby and Babylon Revisited, he hones his conflicts into a furious condemnation. The 1920s were a period of sloth, habitual sin, exhausted illustriousness, and moral despondency; the black mark of a society and world usually tilted more toward attempted civility. Fitzgerald conveys this theme through the use of character, symbolism, and wasteland imagery. First, Fitzgerald uses characters to personify the vast recklessness of the generation. The characters in both are incomprehensibly selfish and carefree, though more noticeably in The Great Gatsby. Tom Buchanan, for instance, is almost flippant in acknowledging his affair with Jordan Baker, a local miscreant golf pro. Tom leaves Nick, Daisy, and Jordan at the dinner table to take a call from her. An exchange between Nick Carraway and Jordan while Tom is gone illuminates the situation. Is something happening (Fitzgerald, Gatsby 19), says Nick. To which Jordan Baker replies, I thought everybody knew. Why- Toms got some woman in New York' (Fitzgerald, Gatsby 19). Tom Buchanan has an acknowledged mistress in New York, and he politely and confidently leaves the dinner table to speak with her. He is the absolute personification of the reckless actions and attitudes that characterize the era. Duncan Shchaeffer and Lorraine Qualles, appearing briefly in Babylon Revisited, also represent reck less and selfish behavior. They burst in to a private meeting at the Peters residence just as Charlie is coercing Lincoln and Marion in to granting him custody of his child. Fitzgerald describes their behavior: They were gay, they were hilarious, they were roaring with laughter. They slid down another cascade of laughter (Fitzgerald, Babylon 385). This after bursting in to the house of a stranger. They are drunk, juvenile, reprehensible in behavior, and acting more like children than adults. Fitzgerald asserts, however, that their actions characterize the generation of lost souls, and these characters are only used to articulate his condemnation of it. Secondly, Fitzgerald uses symbolism to convey a feeling of futility and hopelessness throughout the novel and short story. Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, especially, symbolizes the distorted perceptions and priorities of the decade. Eckleburg watches over the gray ash-heap near Mr. Wilsons garage with what Wilson thinks an all-knowing eye. Wilson has an unusual reverence to Dr. Eckleburg: he considers him God. In a conversation between Wilson and Michaelis, Wilson discusses a conversation he had previously with Mrs. Wilson just before she died: I spoke to her [about her affair with Tom Buchanan]. I told her she might fool me but she couldnt fool God. I took her to the window With and effort he got up and walked the rear window and leaned with his face pressed against it, and I said God knows what youve been doing, everything youve been doing. You may fool me but you cant fool God. Standing behind him Michaelis saw with a shock that he was looking at they eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg. (Fitzgerald, Gatsby 167)Wilson is hopeless and disillusioned, and his connection to Dr. Eckleburg exemplifies the widespread futility of the era. Lastly, Fitzgerald uses wasteland imagery to show how society circa 1920 was dysfunctional and reckless. Fitzgerald describes the scene at the apartment: The apartment was on the top floora small living room, a small diningroom, a small bedroom and a bath. The living room was crowded to the doors with a set of tapestried furniture entirely too large for it so that to move about was to stumble continually over scenes of ladies swinging in the gardens of Versailles. Several old copies of Town Tattle lay on the table together with a copy of Simon Called Peter and some of the small scandal magazines of Broadway. Ku klux Klan rose about four million and spread from the South into the Midwest region and Northern states and even into Canada. The first step involved jumping on the internet and surfing for a "Congressman finder", if you will. I type the word congressman in the space provided. The search engine displayed several different topics to choose from and finally I see the site for a general purpose. Voila! I had become one step closer to find my Representative. After clicking in different places, I landed on the Postal Office web site. Why? You might ask yourself. This general site was to find my "guy" by typing in a five-digit zip code. I was thrilled and could hardly contain myself. I enter the code and it gives me an answer of "There are multiple Representatives who share your 5-digit ZIP code ( 21234 ). Please use the Postal Services ZIP+4 Lookup to determine your 9-digit ZIP code." In other words, I still could not locate this person who is representing my d istrict. I decided to actually do something smart. Look on my mail with the rest of my zip code. I put the code in and finally after thirty minutes of fighting for the truth, "The Honorable Benjamin L. God’s World Essay

The â€Å"Zaabalawi† was written by Naguib Mahfouz (1911-2006) and published on 1963 in the collection of stories, God’s World (Dunya Allah). The central character is afflicted with a disease that no doctors or any other human being can cure. Written in the first person, the narrator remembered during his childhood a folktale saying that there is an extraordinary person named â€Å"Zaabalawi† who can cure any illnesses and diseases. This person possesses healing powers of such magnitude that affliction such as what the narrator has will surely be healed. The protagonist started to half-heartedly look for Zaabalawi, visiting and meeting diverse characters during his quest. He met a lawyer, a bookseller, a government officer, a calligrapher, a musician and a drunkard – all of these persons have somehow met or known Zaabalawi. The first person that the narrator met was Sheikh Quamar, who is a prominent lawyer in Cairo, Egypt. Quamar offered little help with the quest because it seems a long time ago since he last had contact with Zaabalawi. In this instance, it seems that the author Mahfouz is signifying that this person has forgotten Zaabalawi (his spirituality) due to his materialistic needs and successes in life. This type of person can be found all over the world; the person who puts material things and worldly desires primary in his life. Politicians may be inadvertently touched by this characterization. The second person that the narrator met was the District Officer. The officer informed the narrator that he hasn’t seen Zaabalawi for such a long time now for being so busy with his myriad functions and being preoccupied with worldy cares. He felt joy before during his youthful days when he was Zaabalawi and yet has slowly forgotten those days as he became more embroiled with what the world and the government responsibilities offer him. He drew the narrator a map with a fee so that he will be guided in his quest for Zaabalawi. He then guided the narrator inside the calligrapher’s house, Hassanein. This person personified those of us who had already experienced happiness in living a much more simpler life. However, this was only from a brief period in his life for now, he had experienced what it feels like to have power and to be relied upon by thousands of people. Power, indeed, is heady and can ruin one’s self. Hassanein is faithful to Zaabalawi’s memory. His behavior and style of living mirrors his spirituality and servitude toward Allah. He said that in everything that he does, he felt the presence of Zaabalawi. He encouraged the narrator with his sayings that he believed that the narrator will be healed by Zaabalawi. Hassanein also described Zaabalawi’s nature as elusive such that he may be in the vicinity any moment or might not appear in a person’s lifetime. Hassanein symbolizes the faithful followers of God. He has chosen to live life in a simpler term and welcome people in all walks of life without prejudice and bias. He believes in God and is shown through his works. The narrator is then directed towards the house of a famous musician, Sheikh Gad, who looks very serene and is a meditative man. He told the narrator that the suffering and pains that he is experiencing now is a necessary ingredient for him to finally strengthen his faith, and not only his body and mind. Gad believes that the meeting that took place between him and the narrator is in fact, Zaabalawi’s work (God’s effort). Zaabalawi is an inspiration and a motivation for the musician. Later on, the narrator found himself drinking wine at the Negma bar with Hagg wanas, a drunkard who was also acquainted with Zaabalawi. As he continued drinking, his mental and rational faculties were mystically stripped away one by one. With the first drink, the narrator â€Å"ignited his stomach†. The second drink, â€Å"loses his willpower†. The third, â€Å"loses his memory†, the fourth, â€Å"loses sense of future (time and direction), and at the fifth drink, the world revolved, the narrator forgot his quest and instead sees â€Å"colored planes† and found himself in a euphoric stage.

After considerable analysis of the company’s financial position, we recommend that Deluxe Corp. to borrow up to $1. 023 billion to buy back 34,175 shares. In order to achieve this, Deluxe will need to lower its bond rating from A rating to BBB , which results in a decrease in WACC from 11. 47% to 9. 5%. By doing this, Deluxe ’s WACC is minimized, yet the bond rating is still at investment –grade rating; plus, the firm will have a financial flexibility of $872 million, and an increase in its equity value per share by $35. 34. In order to determine the number of shares that could be repurchased, we divided the total allowable debt by the current market per share price. This resulted in a recommended repurchase of 34,175 shares. Next, we conducted a free cash flow analysis to determine the intrinsic enterprise value of Deluxe Corporation.This analysis is similar to the one conducted for the Current intrinsic equity value. However, we lowered the WACC to reflect our recommended credit rating. In estimating the total increase in shareholder value from this repurchase program, we took enterprise value minus the maximum allowable debt at the BBB rating. This gave us the equity value of Deluxe Corporation. Then, we divided the equity value by the current outstanding shares net of the repurchase program. This gave us equity per share value of $63. 24. In comparing this to the old equity per share value, we found an increase of 127%.This is a highly favorable move for the shareholders of Deluxe Corporation. Concluding Recommendation We believe Deluxe Corporation should borrow funds in the amount of $872 million for the stock repurchase program. By borrowing these funds, Deluxe Corporation will be able to increase their equity value per share by 127% while still maintaining investment grade status.
